I am glad I didn’t know what the Tarantula Hawk was at the time.

From a distance you may mistake them for a large black beetle and when you get closer you’ll see the big wasp/ant body type. The first time I saw a Tarantula Hawk at Camp Classen, it looked like a big black beetle to me until I got closer. My second thought was that it was some sort of 2-3 inch long giant ant, and then someone said it must be some sort of wasp, but none of us knew what it was until we got home.

It is odd I’ve never seen one. I don’t really see tarantulas around here either though, so maybe that’s why there are none of the hawks around. Knock wood I never do see one. 🙂

Yes, that is the life of bugs. They are the lowest level of life after plants.

Yes I agree. It looks mean. It isn’t very aggressive but if it does sting you then it is truly terrible. I am glad you have never seen one but I’ll bet they are common where you live. They like dry climates and I’ve seen them twice without living in a dry climate (well compared to you).

Yes that’s what I’ve heard about Black Widows and Wolf Spiders. It is gruesome, but that’s the life of bugs.

I’ve never seen one and don’t want to. I like spiders, and I feel so sorry for the tarantula. Glad you didn’t get near it to bring it home. 🙂

Well, some spiders eat the males after mating and spiders paralyze their prey and then eat it after the insides of the poor insect have liquidized. So, spiders have to endure a predator cycle too.
